Text | Thomas branch of the family (written by Myrtle Thomas) Well it seems in Wales the Thomas family were of some note or consequence and well to do. One of them by name "Jesse" was married and had only one child a boy which they also called "Jesse". When he grew up his parents picked out a girl for him to marry but the boy had fallen in love with another and married her against the parents will and they disinherited him. The father and mother sold their possessions and emigrated to America and left their son in Wales. The old man bought land on Long Island oposite New York where Brooklin now is and started a general merchandise store which he carried on for years. Finally the son after there were several children the oldest of whom they also called Jesse came to America to try to settle the dificulty with the old folks thinking that time had softened their anger. But the old folks would not recieve them but agreed to take their sons oldest boy Jesse and raise him and make him their heir. Well the son and the balance of the family started into the interior to make them a home and were never heard of afterward by any of the relation. When the grandson grew to manhood he started out to try and locate his fathers family and wandred down into Virginia and there becoming discouraged in the search inlisted with the Virginia troops and was in the battle of Braddocs defeat near Pittsburgh Pa and like Washington came out without a scratch. Well after his term of inlistment expired he went farther south into Hyde Co. North Carolina into a Quaker settlement and joined the church. He married I dont know the womans name. There were eight children born to them six boys and two girls of which Nathaniel our grandfather was one. Well the Jesse our great grandfather was married five times and raised three sets of children and then he and his first and last set of children came to Ohio. Well he never went after his grandfathers property and never knew what became of it. Our grandfather Nathaniel married Dorcus Harris (of scotch decent) in North Carolina and the older children were born there. Father was born in Jefferson Co Ohio ( ?? ) and when about eight years old the family moved to Logan Co where he grew up and married Oliva Weatherby who was our mother and your grandmother. Our great grandfather's Thomas'es children first set were Nathanel, John, David, Jesse, Joseph, Nathen, Mary and Ruth their descendents are scattered all over the northwest states from Ohio to the Pacific ocean. His second wife died without children. His third wife had two boys and they stayed in Carolina. I know nothing about them. The fourth wife raised no children the fifth had two - Bengamine and Clayton and came to Ohio with the family. Bengamine was married twice. His first children were Margret and Esther both married and lived near Janesfield Ohio the last I knew of them. I dont recall the names of the men that they married but were members of the friends church. The boys name was John he lived until a few years ago in Marrion Co in the state near where Elin and Ed lives. He died several years ago left a ? family. Only met one of them about four years ago nice looking young man Henry by name. The other wife had a numerous family only know the name of one Ely and the last I heard of him he was with Custers troops out west. The last they knew of Clayton he had started down the Ohio river for the south or west and dropped out of their knowlege. Well Grandfathers children were Joseph, John, Able, Dorcus, William, Enos and Nathan. Nathan was killed by the limb of a tree while chopping in the timber and Enos was accidently shot while cleaning his gun. Joseph was married and had three children boys Joseph, David and Nathan. His wifes name was Temperence I dont know her family name. Joseph died when he was about thirtyfive and his wife sold out and went back to her folks in Carolinbian [Columbiana?] Co. Ohio and grandfather Weatherby bought unckle Josephs farm. Uncle John was the next and he married Margret McRimmer and they had three daughters. Elizabeth married William Beal and raised four children two boys two girls and Margret married Scott Haitford and had several children and lived in Henderson Co. Ohio. I know but very little about them. Louisa married William Winters I dont know about their family. Uncle Able married Rebecca Garwood there were four children born to them Nathaniel and Samuel both Doctors went to Kallamazoo Michigan some sixty years ago and were there the last I heard of them. Daniel B was a blacksmith and lived in inland Ohio. Dorcus married Joshua Hatcher she had two children by name Dorcus & Nathan. Dorcus married Lathrop Riser and lived at Leroy near Bloomington Ill the last that I knew of them. The last that I heard of Nathan Hatcher he was in the union army in 64 your unckle Nathan met him in N.E. Father was the youngest of them he was born in the year of 1806 the 31 day of March. His children Isac, Emos, Bengamine, John, Wm H.H. (William Henry Harrison - my father lived to be 90), Nathan, Esther, Warren and James you probably know. I sac was born in 1828 was married to Mary Louisa Mathis in 1850 and died in 1851 was a blacksmith no children. Enos died in infancy. James the youngest at the age of six John at age of nineteen. Bengamine was fifty eight. Nathan fifty seven. Esther thirty five at their deaths. In regards to the questions you asked of the first wife of the third Jesse I presume that she was English. My grandmother Dorcus Harris that Nathaniel married was of Scotch decent. | |
