Text | Killed.... Richard Paynter, of Grandview, was killed on the morning of August 2nd. His horses ran off, attached to a wagon, the wagon run over him, crushing his skull, breaking his jaw and one of his legs. He leaves a wife and several small children. Mr. Paynter was engaged in hauling stone for Leith's run bridge. He went to the quarry after a load of stone after a slight rain had fallen. One of the quarreymen advised him not to haul as the road was slippery, but he thought he could do so without any danger and loaded one large stone that would weigh a ton or over and started down the hill, he sitting on the stone with his foot on the brake lever. The wagon bed being wet the stone slipped forward with him and loosened the lever, the horses, not being able to hold the load, started to run, throwing Mr. Paynter out over the front part of the wagon, the wheel passing over him killing him instantly. | |
