Text | MRS. PEARL CARSWELL Pearl Shelton, one of four children of John J. and Harriet Shelton, was born Feb. 2, 1872, in Roseville, Illinois, and departed this life at Osborne, Kans., on Oct. 26, 1950, at the age of 78 years 8 months and 24 days. In 1880 she came with her parents to Guide Rock, Nebr., where she grew to young womanhood. On April 19, 1888, she was united in marriage to D. W. Carswell, and to this union ten children were born. In 1905 the family moved to Alton where she resided until the time of her death. On Oct. 6, 1913, her husband passed away, leaving the care of this large family to the mother at an early age. This was indeed a large task and a great responsibility, but this she assumed as only a loving mother could, and her children rise up and call her blessed. Two children also preceded her in death, one daughter, Irma Geisenhener, on Dec. 13, 1941, and one son, Vinton Carswell on March 5, 1946. She was a member of the Alton Methodist Church and also a member of the Rebekah Lodge. Those left to mourn her passing are Mrs. Essie Smith of the home, Clyde of Downs, Mrs. Alto Spoon of Temple City, Calif., Jay and Edwin of Alton, Paul of Monterey Park, Calif., Mrs. Bernice Holthaus of Guiderock, Neb., and Keith of Houston, Texas, also 24 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Jessie Bramwell of Guiderock, Neb., and many other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 29, at 4:00 o'clock in the Alton Methodist Church with Rev. J. W. Frint officiating. Casket bearers were Rex Carswell, Harold Carswell, Richard Carswell, Bill Carswell, Deryl Carswell and Eugene Smith. Interment was made in the Sumner cemetery.
