Text | Anna K. Paynter was 94 years old at death Anna Kate Thomas, daughter of Benjamin and Rhoda Thomas, was born at Oskaloosa, Iowa, July 9, 1866, and passed away at Downs, May 6, 1961, at the age of 94 years, 9 months, and 27 days. The family moved to a farm near Monroe, iowa in 1875, and lived there for three years. In 1878 they came in covered wagons to Kansas and settled in Rooks county. This part of Kansas changed during her lifetime from an area where there were no schools or churches, to the well-planned programs of religion and education today. The first religious meetings in the community were held in her father's home. On July 15, 1894 she was united in marriage to John Thomas Paynter, and became a devoted mother to his four year old son, Roy Elvin. To this union were born four daughters, Rhoda Helen and Eva Murriel, who died in infancy, Jennie Carswell of Alton and Alice Smith of Osborne. After living on a farm in Grant Township until 1914, they moved to Alton where she made her home until her death. A life such as Mrs. Paynter lived cannot be described with words, for the most eloquent words are futile. She was converted at an early age and was always a devoted member of the Methodist church. Her home was always open to any function of the church and she attended church faithfully as long as her health would permit. Her Bible was studied with deep reverence even in the last weeks of her life. As she served her Lord she ministered to her loved ones and neighbors. She cared for the sick, be they aged or a new baby. She looked after many shutins; going about with a word of cheer and a helping hand. Many sick people were cared for in her home. She was an outstanding example of a self-educated person, for after 1875 she had very few opportunities to attend school. Yet spurred by pride in her country and community, she read current newspapers, religious and educational magazines; her objective being to enlighten herself on the important issues of the day. Her own family and home were never neglected. She was an oustanding wife, mother and grandmother, loving, kind and true. November 1, 1957 she suffered a fractured hip and her health declined from that time on. Since then she was cared for by her children. The word "finis" cannot be used in such a life as this, for she will live on and on in the hearts of those who knew her. Her husband preceeded her in death June 30, 1933, and the son March 23, 1961. Besides these, she was preceeded in death by all her brothers and sisters and their companions, both of her sons-in-law, Eddie C. smith and Jay L. Carswell, each of whom held a place of love in her heart, and a grandosn, Cleo Dean Carswell, whome she loved dearly. Besides the two daughters, she leaves a daughter-in-law, Ethel paynter of Boring, Oregon, 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and a host of friends who will always feel the world was a better place to live in, because they were privileged to know and love Aunt Katie. Memorial services were held in the Methodist church in Alton Monday, May 8, at 2:30 p.m. with Reverend N. R. Briles assisted by her nephew Reverend A. D. Hull in charge. Music was provided by Gordon Bartholomew, soloist, and Maryellen Willis, organist. Casket bearers were her six grandsons Harold, Bill, Deryl and Gayle Carswell, John D. and Eddie C. Smith. | |
