  	FINDING OF MAN'S BODY DISCLOSES BRUTAL MURDER _____________ Stanley ("Bud") Holmes Found Slain on Highway near Hunter Thursday. _____________ The charred body of Stanley ("Bud") Holmes, aged 31, farm hand, was found Thursday on the highway about one mile north of his mother's home, near Hunter. The neck was broken, it was said, at the base of the brain which resulted in the coroner's verdict Friday that the death was caused by unknown persons. Sheriff Bob Smith said Friday that he was working on several clues which probably would lead to arrests. He declined to discuss probable motives for the crime. Holmes last was seen alive Thursday morning at the farm of Ed Tackett for whom he was working. He told Tackett that he was going to see his mother, Mrs. S.H. Holmes, who lives three miles from the Tackett farm southeast of Hunter. The body was discovered Thursday about 6:30 P.M. by Nathan Melton and Western Jetter who were passing along the highway. It was charred so badly that they believed it was the body of a negro and continued to their homes before reporting the matter to officers. When they returned later they recognized the body as that of Holmes. The murderer apparently had attempted to burn the body with the aid of gasoline, Dr. U.S. Monroe reported. He also said that Holmes had been killed by a blow at the base of the brain which had broken the neck. Investigation showed that robbery was not the motive for the crime, officers said, as several coins were found in the pockets and charred remnants of bills were discovered. Holmes was a native of that section but until a few weeks ago had been living at Marked Tree. He lived with his mother, who was unable to disclose any motive for the killing. All clothing except the shirt sleeve of the right arm and the man's shoes, was burned on his body as it lay in a ditch on the north side of the road at a point one and one-half miles south and three miles east of Hunter. Mr. J.I. Ashby, justice of the peace of Hunter, acting as coroner, conducted the inquest. Holmes was not married. His father, who is dead, was Kip Holmes.
