John M. Cochensparger
STURGIS -- John M. Cochensparger, age 86, of Sturgis, formerly of Bronson, died late Sunday, April 3, 2005, at the Battle Creek VA Hospital following a several-week illness.
John was born March 24, 1919, in Noble Township, son of John A. and Verba (Rumsey) Cochensparger and had lived in Bronson and Sturgis all of his life.
He worked for the former LA Darling Company in Bronson for 32 years until the company closed in 1968. He then worked at Sturgis Company/GF Business Forms from 1969 to 1984.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, John served at the Great Lakes Navy Training Center in Illinois, the submarine base in Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands, aboard the USS Acubens (AKS-5) and the United States Naval Base in New Guinea and finally in the Asiatic/pacific Theatre from 1942 to 1945 as a Ships Cook First Class.
He was a life member of the American Legion Post 259 and the VFW Post 5003, both in Bronson. John loved fishing, hunting, gardening, cooking, playing cards and spending time with his family and his animals.
John married Alice Irene Kanouse-Ball on March 3, 1951. Alice died in 1988.
Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Leasa Ball of Bronson and John and Robyn Cochensparger of Sturgis; son Steven Ball of Colon; daughter Phyllis Ball of Coldwater and daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Roger Ritchie of Bronson; 21 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Alice; his brother Dale Cochensparger of Bronson, and a grandson, Steven O'Neal Ball Jr.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. today at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson, where memorial donations may be made to the Bronson Post of the American Legion.
Funeral services celebrating the life of John M. Cochensparter will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with Pastor Doug Carr of the Gateway River of Life Church officiating. Interment will follow in Bronson Cemetery
with full military honors conferred by the Bronson Posts of the American Legion
and VFW.
