- Grandma Paynter, whose death was mentioned in this paper last week, was in every sense of the word, a pioneer of Osborne county and she tasted the bitter disappointments and heartaches of the early settlers. One of her great accomplishments was the rearing of her large family of children, whom she had near her during her life in this vicinity.
The following obituary was read at the funeral service by the Rev. C. A. Spalding of the Alton Methodist church: Helen M. Patterson was born in Mongahala county, West Virginia, May 22, 1836, and died in Alton, Kansas, December 19, 1916, at the age of 80 years, five months and twenty-seven days.
When still a child, her parents moved to Ohio, where she grew to womanhood and was married to Daniel Paynter on the tenth day of November, 1859. To them were born seven children - five sons and two daughters - one of the daughters, Sarah Elizabeth, departed this life December 22, 1872. The other children, John T., James F., William H., Charles E., Albert J., and Mattie M. Miller, still survive and were privileged to be at their Mother's bedside during her last hours.
The family moved from Ohio to Alton, Kansas, in April, 1879, settling in 1880 on a claim six miles northwest of this place. Seven years later - November 26, 1887 - the husband and father passed out into the Great Beyond, and in October, 1889, Mrs. Paynter, with her daughter Mattie, moved to Alton, where she has since resided. She united with the Christian Church of Mount Hope, Ohio, in 1873, later transferring her membership to the Christian Church at Stockton, Kansas, where it remained until the time of her death.
The place she held in the hearts and lives of her family and friends is an index of the life she lived, and of her, as of few, could it be said, "The stars shall shine for a thousand years / For a thousand years and a day / But God and she will love and live / When the stars have passed away."
