  	RAILROAD ACCIDENT WITH FATAL RESULTS Mrs. Eliza Skilien Dies from Injuries Sustained The first accident at the crossing of the W. N. Y. and Pa. railroad on Erie St., in this village, occurred Wednesday evening at 6 o'clock, from which one person died from injuries received and two were badly bruised and cut, but no bones were broken. Wm. Williams runs a transfer carriage to all trains tor passengers and baggage, and Wednesday evening at the Erie Station, Mrs. Eliza Skillin and daughter, Miss Jennie, took this carriage to ride home. The crossing of the W. N. Y. and Pa, railway is but a few rods west of the Erie station, and the view on both sides of approaching trains is almost shut out by the warehouses on either side of the highway. As Williams approached the crossing Mr. A. Ayrault who saw the freight train coming, called to Williams to stop but he did not hear him, and in a moment more was struck by the engine, the occupants of the carriage were thrown several feet and with force on the frozen ground; the carriage was smashed, while the horse was uninjured and jumped across the track on the west side. Several persons near by ran to their assistance, white another started for a physician, and summoned Dr. White. The ladies, were both conscious when picked up and removed to their home in this village, where on examination no bones were found broken. Mrs. Skillin had an ugly scalp wound in the head and was badly bruised, Miss Skillin had her shoulder, hip and arm bruised and her back hurt but can not tell at this writing the extent of her injuries. Mr. Williams is bruised and cut about his head but sustained no serious injuries. Several of our citizens say the train whistled before reaching the crossing and when the engineer saw the wagon blew the danger signal; if so, no blame rests on the engineer. Mrs. Eliza Skillin's injuries and the shock to her system, proved too much for a woman of her advanced age, being nearly 80 years old, and after reaching home grew worse and expired about 9 o'clock that evening. Deceased was born at "Calinshia," the residence of her mother, near Belfast,Ireland, March 13, 1818. She came to New York city with her parents in 1822, and was married to Mr. Hance Skillin in 1838 in that city, where they resided until 1846, when she came with her husband to this village and has ever since lived here, Mr. Skillin was one of the pioneer and successful merchants of the place, and was in business up to the time of his death, which occurred in 1864. Mrs. Skillin was a remarkably active woman, physically and mentally, for one of her years. The morning that she went to Rochester she arose before 5 o'clock, ate her breakfast and walked from her home to the Erie: station, a mile distant, Mrs. Skillin was a great reader,had a retentive memory, her mind was unimpaired and as clear and active as in the prime of life. In all matters of business or pleasure, the children counseled with their mother and were sure to receive wise advice and practical suggestions. She was a devoted member of the Presbyterian church and regular attendant of the same for half a century. Mrs. Geo, Tuthill of Cawker City, Kansas; Jas. L. Skillin of New York city and Robert Skillin of Lebanon, Kansas; Mrs. M. J. Noonan and Misses Eliza, Jennie and Martha Skillin of this village, and sister, Mrs. Ann Townsend of New York, survive her, and will have the sympathy of all in their bereavement. The funeral services will be held, at the Presbyterian church. Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Dr. Parsons officiating.
