  Notes	Roy's mother passed away when he was only three months old, at which time he lived with his grandmother Hellen Paynter and his aunt Martha Paynter until he was about 4 years old and his father married Anna Kate Thomas. Roy gew to manhood in the Alton community and was a successful farmer and wheat grower at his farm north of Alton. In 1948 he and his wife retired from farming and moved to Boring, Oregon, near Portland, where they have their home. After moving to Oregon, he worked at the Gresham cannery as a maintenance man during the summer for two years and drove a school bus for the Orient school district for three years. He served as a board member for the Alton grade school for several years. [6]

  		Sod house on the John Paynter farm This two room sod house was on the John T. Paynter and was built prior to 1894. The farm was located three miles north and one and one-quarter miles west of Alton, KS. The modern home is located on the same spot where the sod house stood, and is occupied by Deryl Carswell and family.
