  Notes	According to HFS, Jonathan Dayton, baptized 3 Aug 1701, son of Samuel and his first (unkown) wife, married Rachel Ramsey 12 Feb 1719 and had issue. He shows no other marriages for Jonathan. In the Salmon Record the year is double-dated as 1719/20, and Dayton's name printed as [Jo]nathn Daiton. VES or his source apparently interpreted this as Nathaniel, and reported that Rachel married Nathaniel Dayton. (A younger brother Nathan married Amy Stratton in 1725 (HFS).) Jacobus (in JDD) thought it unlikely, though possible, that this Jonathan married Rachel Ramsey daughter of Simon Ramsey of Southold, as he was only 18 years of age at the time. He assigns to Jonathan, son of Samuel Dayton, the three marriages above, which came after the marriage of Jonathan Dayton to Rachel Ramsey. He also listed four sons of Jonathan and Patience ( ) Dayton as: Elias b May 1737, Daniel b ca 1740, Robert b 1742, Jonathan b ca 1743-4, all of whom survived their father. But New Jersey Archives (Vol 34:134) has an estate of Jonathan Dayton of Essex Co who died intestate. It was probated 1 Nov 1778, and administered by Keturah Dayton, Elias Dayton and Jonathan J. Dayton (from Lib 16:522). But the name Keturah was not mentioned by Jacobus as either a wife or a daughter. The two fine genealogists, Jacobus and Seversmith, were not able to solve the problem of Jonathan Dayton. Perhaps new sources will emerge which may hold the answer. [1]
