  Notes	From Pedigrees of Charlemagne's Descendants: At the same time his brother Carloman (Pepin) was crowned king of Italy, as noted above, Louis was crowned king of Aquitaine, where he spent the first thirty-five years of his life. At Charlemagne's death in 814, he succeeded to the throne. After a troubled reign he died on 20 June 840. Following the birth of an illegitimate daughter (Alpais or Elpheid), he married twice and had four sons and two daughters of those unions.
