Notes	Micajah, eldest son of John Mathis was an enterprising man, and besides his father's liberal bequests, he accumulated a handsome property, but the depreciation of the continental paper was a heavy blow to his financial affairs, yet not withstanding all of his losses at his death his personal property amounted to many thousand dollars, and he also owned the Francis French farm and a farm at Chestnut Neck now called the Shreve Mathis farm. On the Francis French farm was a noted shipyard, where several large sloops were built. A brig called Argo was built at Micajah Mathis Sr.'s landing, on what was called the "Francis French farm" and for many years this was a noted shipyard. The Argo was commanded by Captain John Sowers, a son-in-law of Captain John Leaks Sr. of Bass river. Soon after the building of the Argo, Micajah Mathis built a large sloop called Hope, of Bass River, at the same place. She was designed for the purpose of carrying lumber from Egg Harbor to New York City, and was commanded by Barzilla Mathis, son of the owner of the vessel. After Micajah's death, his sons Job and Barzilla were the proprietors of the Hope. All of these old-time crafts used the old inlet to the Atlantic. He also owned many hundred acres of heavily timbered land and cedar swamp. There was considerable ship building done at Bass river, the principle ship owners were the Mathis, Cranmers, Adams, Frenchs, Lovelands, Allens and others. The principal ship yards at Bass river were the Francis French place and the Caleb Cranmer place. He settled on the Francis French place where he resided till the end of his life.
